Charlie Galloway Obituary

Charlie DuBuisson Butler Galloway died at Courtyard Gardens in Lawrenceville, GA, on February 2, 2011, at the age of 86. She had lived in Lawrenceville since 2007 and prior to that had lived in Lilburn, GA, from 1985 until 2007. Born in Yazoo City, MS, on December 3, 1924, she was the tenth of eleven children of the late James Sessions Butler and Jane Allison Williams Butler.

During high school and college, Charlie played basketball and baseball, instructed swimming, was a lifeguard and a summer camp counselor. She was also a member of several honor societies, such as Mortar Board, Kappa Mu Epsilon, Pi Delta Epsilon, Beta Beta Beta, and Who''s Who. She was also on the staff and editor of the school newspaper, The Spectator. In addition, she was a member of the church choir where she sang as a soloist. Charlie graduated with honors from Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS, receiving a BS in Mathematics; an MS in Mathematics from West Texas State College in Canyon, TX; and an EdS in Education Administration & Supervision from Wichita State University in Wichita, KS.

Charlie married James Byron Galloway, who preceded her in death on August 22, 1998. Because of his career in the United States Air Force, her career as a teacher of mathematics took her from Bay County High School in Panama City, FL, where she was also the cheerleader sponsor; Pine Grove School in Valdosta, GA; Aurora School at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AK; Amarillo High School in Amarillo, TX; Henderson Jr. High School in Henderson, NV; Jardine Jr. High in Wichita, KS; and Derby Sr. High School in Derby, KS. While at Derby Sr. High School, she was the Department Head, sponsor of the math team and National Honor Society, and a finalist for Kansas Mathematics Teacher of the Year.

Throughout her life Charlie was an active member and leader in the church, serving on the altar guild, as treasurer, and in the choir: Trinity Episcopal Church in Yazoo City, MS; St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Derby, KS; and co-founder of St. Clements Anglican Catholic Church in Snellville, GA. She was presently a member of St. Stephen''s Anglican Catholic Church in Athens, GA. In addition to being a wonderful mother, Charlie was very involved in community activities, being the troop leader of girl scouts, den mother for cub scouts, member of Beta Sigma Phi, Baron DeKalb Chapter of NSDAR, Colonial Dames, Humana Eastside Hospital Friends Volunteers, and Snellville Keenagers.

Charlie is survived by a daughter, Janie Galloway Seglund and husband John of Greensboro, GA; a son, James Lester Galloway and wife Kay of Lawrenceville, GA; a sister, Caroline Butler Wilson of Meridian, MS; a brother, Robert Butler and wife Ginny of Mesa, AZ; and five grandchildren and one great grandchild: Jane Allison Sheldon of Atlanta, GA; Michael S. Sheldon Jr of Atlanta, GA; Dr. Charles R. Sheldon of Augusta, GA; Captain James G. Sheldon, wife Heidi and their son, Oscar James of Richmond, VA; and Rob Galloway of Lawrenceville, GA, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at McCommons Chapel with Father Nick Athanaelos officiating. Interment will follow in the Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Jane Allison Sheldon, Michael S. Sheldon Jr., Dr. Charles R. Sheldon, Captain James G. Sheldon, Robert D. Galloway, and Michael S. Sheldon Sr. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time for the service on Saturday at McCommons Funeral Home.
