Charles Julian Harris, Sr.
Charles Julian Harris, Sr., age 77, of Commerce, Georgia, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 at St. Mary''s Hospital in Athens. Born in Houston County, AL on October 1, 1928 he was the son of the late Henry Bullard Harris and Julia Fraser Harris. He graduated from Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC and later from Georgia Tech with a BS in Industrial Management. During the Korean War he served in the United States Marine Corps as a jet pilot. He moved to Greensboro as Executive Vice President of Mary Leila Cotton Mill and served as Mayor in the late sixties. In 1984 he went to Colorado as an accountant and was Mayor of Dillon, CO for seven years. He resided in Dillon for eighteen years and moved back to Athens in 2002. Julian was a member of the Commerce Presbyterian Church and a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro. He had been past president of the Greensboro Lions Club and a City Councilman both in Greensboro and Colorado prior to becoming Mayor. He enjoyed sports and flying his plane.
Mr. Harris is survived by a daughter, Karla Rose Harris of Greensboro, GA; three sons, Joe Nalley and wife Kimberly of Lakeland, FL, Charles Julian "Snick" Harris Jr of Greensboro, GA and Patrick Bullard Harris of Watkinsville, GA; six grandchildren, Courtney Anne Nalley, Kendall Marie Nalley, Jordan Britt Harris, Kristina Ivie Thurmond, Michael James Crownover and Rose M. Crownover; two great grandchildren, Stormie Shae Rose Newell and Sklie Shyanne Newell; two nephews, Henry Bullard Harris III and wife Linda and Carl Harris; a niece, Helen Sherman; eight great nieces and nephews; and a number of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Nell Harris, Walter Harris and Henry Bullard Harris Jr. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Dr. Tom Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Greenview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are David Kopp, Ben Hood, Ricky Easley, Carey Williams Jr., Jimmy Scott and Mickey Channell. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday night at the funeral home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
