Cecil Hawley Obituary

Cecil Franklin Hawley, age 94, of Union Point, GA died Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA.  Born in White Plains, GA on March 14, 1925 he was the son of the late David McBride Hawley and Nancy Viola Adams Hawley.  He graduated from Union Point High School in the class of 1943 and attended Reinhardt University for one year.  He also attended Georgia Southern for his undergraduate degree and received his Masters degree from Peabody College which is now Vanderbilt.  On October 21, 1944 he married the former Jean Davis and at the time of his death they had celebrated 74 years of marriage. During World War II, he proudly served his country in the  Air Corps of the United States Army. While stationed in Germany and serving as a gunner on a B-17 he was reported missing. During his working career he was principal for Rockdale County, Habersham County and Pierce County and retired in 1987 as assistant principal in Clayton County.  He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Parent Teacher Association.  In 1991 they returned to his hometown of Union Point.  He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Union Point, GA. He loved his family dearly and in his spare time enjoyed buying, selling and working on cars.  Always an avid reader with The Wall Street Journal as one of his favorites.

Cecil is survived by his wife Jean Hawley of Union Point, GA; children, David McBride Hawley (Teena) of Conyers, GA, Peggy Cecilia Latham (Steve) of Lilburn, GA, Paul Martin Hawley (Karen) of Woodstock, GA and Marianne Hawley Freeman (Randy) of Locust Grove, GA; grandchildren, Davis Matthew Hawley (Sherry), Joshua Christian Hawley (Stephanie), Steven Latham (Stephanie), Shana Latham, Amberly Latham, Mikayla Birthrong, Adam Hawley, Ryan Douglas Freeman and Stephanie Goss (Matthew); great grandchildren, Blakely Harper Goss, Colton Dean Goss, Megan Latham, Tommy Latham, Joel Teeple, Tenley Bleu Hawley and Jacob Chay Hawley; other relatives and many friends.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, James David Hawley and Francis Oscar Hawley and great granddaughter Olivia Blake Goss.

A Graveside Service and Celebration of His Life with military honors will be held Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. John Lamsma officiating.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service at Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N. Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Matthew Goss, Ryan Freeman, Christian Hawley, Adam Hawley, Steven Latham and Matthew Hawley  The family requests memorials be made to The Leukemia Society, 2859 Paces Ferry Road SE #725, Atlanta, GA  30339.  Callaway Funeral Home, 208 N.
