Bobbie Phelps Obituary

Bobbie Lee Allen Phelps, 75, of Greensboro, Georgia died on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at her home, surrounded by her family, after an extended illness. A native of Greene County, Bobbie was born on January 17, 1935 to Josephine West Allen of Greensboro, GA and the late Lee Lucious Allen, Sr.. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1953 and Marsh Business College in Atlanta, GA in 1954. On June 14, 1958, Bobbie married Darrel Phelps of Greensboro, Georgia. She was an executive secretary in the regional office of General Mills Corporation until 1958, when she and Darrel moved to Athens, Georgia. There, she worked as a secretary for the University of Georgia Student Union until they built their home and moved back to Greensboro in 1962. From then on, she worked with her husband as his secretary and bookkeeper in his parttime engineering and land surveying business. Bobbie and Darrel travelled extensively, including all 50 states (driving twice to Alaska), all of the provinces in Canada and parts of Mexico. They also travelled to Europe, Central and South America, Australia and Africa. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, where she taught in the 1st-3rd grade Children''s Sunday School Class for many decades and was a member of the Amicus Sunday School Class. Bobbie loved golf and was a member of the Greene County Country Club, where she won numerous titles and also played in surrounding counties. She was also an avid Bridge player and a wonderful cook.

Bobbie''s family and friends will remember her with love. In addition to her mother, Josephine Allen of Greensboro, GA, she is survived by her husband, Darrel Phelps of Greensboro, GA; her daughter, Rebecca Long and husband Bill of Sandy Springs, GA, a brother, Lee "Dink" Allen of Greensboro, GA; and two grandchildren, Samantha Long and William Long of Sandy Springs, GA. She was preceded in death by a son, Scott Phelps and a sister, Mary Jim Vandiver.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with the Rev. Dr. Norman Waldrip and Rev. Rick Hermann officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenview Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA. Serving as pallbearers are Bob Beeland, Cotton Boswell, Bobby Durham, Melvin Duvall, Ricky Jones, David Torbert and Gerald Torbert. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Amicus Sunday School Class. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 203 S. Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at McCommons Funeral Home, 109 West Broad Street Greensboro, GA. (706) 453-2626.
