Belle Lewis Obituary

Belle Huey Lewis, age 81, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004, at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. Born in Polk County, Georgia, on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John Leroy Huey and Allie Victoria Huey. She was also the daughter-in-law of the late Miles Walker Lewis, Attorney at Law, in Greensboro and niece of the late Sheriff L. L. Wyatt. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1940 and two years later married her high school sweetheart, Toombs DuBose Lewis, Sr., who was at the time in college at The Citadel. They were married in The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, in Greensboro. Toombs Sr. then joined the Marine Corps and they moved to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Toombs D. Lewis, Jr. was born June 7,1944 and after the war, the Lewis family moved to Athens where Toombs D. Lewis, Sr. completed his education at the University of Georgia. Most recently living in Swainsboro, they returned eight years ago to Greensboro and lived in the original Lewis family home that was constructed some 80 years ago. Belle was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Greensboro.

Survivors include one son, Toombs DuBose Lewis, Jr. and wife Karen, of Watkinsville, GA; four grandchildren, Cindy L. Kauserud and husband Peder, Ginny L. Menzi and husband Matt, Robert Toombs Lewis, and William Dukes Lewis and wife Jessica; and four great-grandchildren, Kristian Pedersen Kauserud, Davin DuBose Kauserud, Ella DuBose Menzi and Eliza Jane Lewis. Belle was preceded in death by her husband, Toombs DuBose Lewis, Sr., in May of 2003; a sister Polly H. Baugh; and two brothers, John Huey and Howard E. Huey.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, in Greensboro, with the Rev. D. Geoffrey Taylor, Rector and The Very Rev. John Via officiating. Interment will follow at the Greensboro City Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Lewis Home.
