Allen Page Roper

Allen Page Roper, age 91, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital. Mr. Roper was one of eight children, six boys and two girls, born in Franklin County on April 20, 1913 to the late King Samuel Roper and Carrie Blackwell Roper. After graduating from high school in Carnesville, he started working for the state agriculture department in Atlanta. In 1937 he married his high school sweetheart, Marian Hutcherson. He later owned and operated a drugstore in Carnesville, but in 1943 he moved to Greensboro to join the state highway department where he worked for six years. During this time he began a business of buying pulpwood and real estate. In 1952 he was the State Senator for Greene County for two years and was later elected to the House of Representatives where he served for seven years and under four governors. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro for over sixty years. A  He was preceded in death by his loving wife of sixty two years, Marian Hutcherson Roper; and two granddaughters, Paige Roper Tenbrook and Elizabeth Alexandra Roper. He is survived by three sons, Robert A. "Bobby" Roper and wife Sally of Greensboro, GA, Sam K. Roper and wife Zandra of Greensboro, GA and David L. Roper and wife Jana of Greensboro, GA; a sister, Ruth Roper Wansley of Athens, GA; twelve grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. A  Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning and Rev. Ed Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Wesley Chapel Wesleyan Church Cemetery in Greensboro. Serving as pallbearers are Ken Cawthon, Billy Copelan, Cotton Boswell, Lewis Duvall, Charles Copelan, and Pep Stone. Honorary pallbearers will be Gentry Strickland, Ricky Easley, Chris Houston, Ford Boston, David Evans, Ricky Lindsey, Jim Cline, Calvin Jernigan, Allen Haywood and W.S.Ashley Sr. Any memorials may be made to Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital, 1201 Siloam Road, Greensboro, GA 30642. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday night at the A.P. Roper home. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
