Allen Franklin Haywood, age 88, of Greensboro, GA died on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at Providence Health Care of Sparta. Living most of his life in Greene County, Allen was born in Warren County on May 3, 1918 to the late Juddie Haywood and Mary Todd Haywood both of Warren County. He graduated from Greensboro High School where he was a starting guard on offense and defense for the 1933 10th District Champion Greensboro Tigers. In September of 1942 during World War II, he left to join the United States Army and achieved the rank of Sergeant. He served throughout the European Theatre under General George S. Patton until December of 1945. Not long after returning from the war he and Mr. T. A. Wilson started Greene Supply Company, Inc. where Allen later became the President and owner. Because of declining health he retired in July of 2002 after fifty-five years. He was a member of VFW Adams Walker Post #4259 in Greensboro where he received his fifty year pin, the American Legion in Madison for over fifty years and attended his Army Company''s Annual Reunions for over forty years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Smith Haywood, in April of 1988. He is survived by a brother, Alva L. Haywood of Warrenton, GA and the VA Home in Milledgeville, GA; two nephews, R. Allen Haywood and wife Susan of Sparta, GA and Karl N. Haywood of Warrenton, GA; a great niece, Natalie Haywood; a great nephew, Jordan Haywood; a dear friend, Rachel Duvall of Greensboro, GA; two loyal employees and good friends, Ricky Lindsey of Greensboro, GA and David Evans of Greensboro, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Greenview Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Serving as pallbearers are David Evans, Ricky Lindsey, Pep Stone, Harold Glass, Charles Copelan, Ray Duvall, E. G. "Billy" Copelan Sr., Ceils Merritt and Cotton Boswell. Serving as honorary pallbearers are members of the VFW Adams Walker Post #4259 of Greensboro and the American Legion of Madison. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Alzheimer''s Association, Georgia Chapter, 1925 Century Blvd., NE, Suite 10, Atlanta, GA 30345-3315.
