Alan LaRue Bechtol of Covington, GA, passed away at home on Sunday, August 23, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 67. He was born on March 17, 1948 in Lewisburg, PA and was the son of the late Harold Elsworth Bechtol and Helen Marguerite Shirk Bechtol. He graduated from Milton High School in Milton, PA and attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior in Superior, WI. He married the former Sheila Bryan of Greensboro on July 22, 1972. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Flight Crewman from 1967 until 1977 and afterwards medically retired to the Fleet Reserve. After his career with the military, he was a Computer Engineer for many companies and in 2003 began his own company, Bechtol Custom Home Inspection. He was a member of Walker United Methodist Church of Greensboro. Alan derived much pleasure hunting, fishing and golfing and was a member of ASHI. Alan was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his wife of forty-three years, Sheila Bechtol of Covington, GA, Alan is survived by a son, Andrew Alan Bechtol and his wife Nicole of Covington, GA; daughter-in-law, Amy Conner Bechtol; five grandchildren, Kristina Marie Bechtol, Jacob Alan Bechtol, Peyton Michael Bechtol, Hailey Renee Bechtol, and Christopher James Bechtol; mother-in-law, Mildred Bryan of Covington, GA; brother, Barry L. Ditzler and his wife Samantha of Decatur AL; and extended family, Jarrad Overman, Jewel Ann Overman and Brielle Leeah Overman; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by a son, James Bryan “Jim” Bechtol.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Walker United Methodist Church, 2730 Walker Church Road, Greensboro, GA with Rev. John Pike and Rev. Russell Nuss officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 25, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home in Greensboro. Serving as pallbearers are Andy Bechtol, Jarrad Overman, Robert Moon, Colin Russell, Matthew Geiger and Mark Geiger. The family requests that memorials be made to Walker United Methodist Church.
