Thomas Uehlin Obituary

Thomas Lee (“Tom”) Uehlin passed away on March 9, 2024 after an extended battle with Alzheimer's disease. Tom Uehlin, son of Ruth Arnes Uehlin and Carl Joseph Uehlin, was born on November 24, 1936, in Cumberland, Wisconsin.  He grew up in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, graduating from Rice Lake High School in 1954. He joined the United States Navy in 1954, soon after graduating from high school.  He served his basic training at Great Lakes and in Norman, Oklahoma and Memphis, Tennessee where he was schooled in airplane mechanics.  He later served as a Flight Engineer on an R3Y at Alameda Air Station in Alameda, California.  While serving in Alameda, he met his wife of 65 years, they were married on June 22, 1958, and immediately journeyed to Superior, Wisconsin, to live while Tom attended University of Wisconsin at Superior, graduating in December, 1961 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and a minor in Insurance.  He was immediately hired by The St. Paul Companies in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he was employed for 33 years, serving in various positions and locations.  He started his employment as an Adjuster in St. Paul, Minnesota and finished his career as a Regional President for Travelers Insurance in Atlanta, Georgia.  In 1995, Tom retired and he and Peggy moved to Reynolds at Lake Oconee, building their new home in 1995.

Peggy was beside his side in all his business moves and many happy summers spent at Lake Couderay near Hayward, Wisconsin with family and friends.  He was a family man loving his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting in many locations in the U.S.  He was a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers.  Tom enjoyed woodworking, golfing and served Habitat for Humanity in Putnam County, Georgia, helping build many homes.  He spent endless hours working on the building of Lake Oconee Lutheran Church in Eatonton, Georgia, along with other members of the congregation and Laborers for Christ from various parts of the U.S.  He served as a Trustee of the Greene County Library and the Uncle Remus (later the Azalea) Regional Library System.  He was a charter member of Lake Oconee Lutheran Church.

Besides his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Peggy) Uehlin, Tom is survived by his daughter, Lauri Ann Roberts (James) and daughter-in-law, Tammy Roberts Uehlin (widow of Craig Uehlin). Also surviving grandchildren: Courtney Uehlin McCarthy (Matt), Morgan Roberts Minich (Jordan), Riley Uehlin, Nicholas Roberts (Katharine), Hunter Uehlin and Peyton Uehlin; great grandchidren: Collins McCarthy (5), Caden Minich (5), Davis McCarthy (2), and Madeline Minich (1); nieces and nephews: Tom Turry, Susan Turry-Coyan, Steven Fisher, William Fisher, Erin Thomas, Noah Perry, Jared Guthrie, Joshua Guthrie and Jessica Jacobs.
