Cathy Gray Weatherford

Cathy Gray Weatherford, age 71, of Athens, GA, formerly of Augusta, GA, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA. Born in McKeesport, PA, on January 18, 1943, she was the daughter of the late James and Mary Meecham Gray. Cathy graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, where she majored in English. She earned a Master’s degree in Guidance Counseling at Ohio University, and would go on to work as a guidance counselor for 13 years. In 1977, she married Warren C. Weatherford in Pleasant Hills, a small community outside of Pittsburgh, PA, and moved to live with Warren in Augusta. In 1980, Cathy gave birth to her son, Andy, and became a homemaker. She served her community by volunteering for many years at University Hospital and the Mother’s Day Out program at First Baptist Church of Augusta. After living in Augusta for thirty-seven years, Cathy and Warren moved to Athens in 2003. Cathy loved spending time with family and friends, and was a very good listener who always put others first. She was an avid sports fan who enjoyed the Georgia Bulldogs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, and many other sports. Reading, baking, traveling, and visiting her son in Cincinnati, OH were other activities she enjoyed very much.  While living in Augusta, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, but presently was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church in Woodville, GA.

Survivors include her husband, Warren Weatherford of Athens, GA; a son, Andy Weatherford of Cincinnati, OH; two nieces, Molly Coltharp (husband Chuck) and Gwen McIntyre; great nephew, Mac Coltharp; great niece, Chloe Coltharp; brother-in-law Roger McIntyre; other relatives; and many close friends.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Gray McIntyre.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 3500 Walton Way Extension, Augusta, GA 30909 with Dr. Tim Owings officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until time for the service at First Baptist Church of Augusta. The family requests any memorials be made to the American Cancer Society. Warren, I never met you or Cathy but my mother, Blanche Wallace, who lives in Lincolnton, Ga, was friends of your parents and I have fond memories of Alice and Cleveland. Mama saw where Cathy passed away and we wanted to send our sincere sympathy to you and Andy in the loss of your loved one.

Dear Warren:

I was so sad to see Cathy's obituary. It is ironic that I found it as we had been away during February and don't usually have time to catch up on the news. I wish I had known you and Cathy lived nearby as we live at Lake Oconee. I knew Cathy when she moved to Capitol Drive in Pleasant Hills back in the 40's, I think.

Cathy was also Secretary of our senior class at Thomas Jefferson High School. We were close friends and I regarded Cathy as a very special girl.

I am sorry for your loss. I am sure the Lord is enjoying having Cathy in His presence.

Sincere sympathy,
Lynne Bunson
