Richard was a lifelong resident of Greene County and a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point. He was born on December 10, 1931 the son of the late Robert Joel Newsom, Sr. and Irene Doster Newsom. Richard graduated from Union Point High School and on June 28, 1964 he married Nancy Jo Dowdy. For forty-seven years, from 1950 to 1997, he worked for the Georgia Railroad which later became CSX as Depot Agent and from 2001 until November of 2008 he worked for the Union Point Housing Authority. He was a former County Commissioner for District 2 and was a former member of the Union Point City Council. His hobbies were feeding the birds and collecting trains. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his care for others and, most important, his love for his family.

Survivors include his wife of nearly forty-six years, Nancy Dowdy Newsom, of Union Point; a daughter Sally Adams (Stacy) of the Liberty Community; two sons, Richard "Ricky" Doster Newsom Jr. (Becky) of Greensboro, and Joe Newsom (Kathy) of Union Point; a niece, Kay Wimberly; a nephew, Giles Bailey, many other relatives and friends, and his beloved dog, Holly that he affectionately called his little girl. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert "Bob" Joel Newsom, Jr. and a sister, Ella Newsom Bailey.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Dr. David Key and Dr. Robert L. Whitmire officiating. Although I did not have the opportunity to personally meet Mr. Newsom, I have come to know him through ongoing accounts of his life, loves, and then his illness through my business association with his son, Ricky. It saddens me to hear that his beloved family and friends have lost such a fine man. However, through my friendship with Ricky I feel that those wonderful qualities that you all have treasured in Mr. Newsom will live on in his son, for he is a fine, gentle, honorable man. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you.

Ms. Nancy, Ricky, Joe, and Sally, I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Richard when we were down this past weekend. You will have to draw on your memories with him to help you during this hard time. It doesn't seem to get easier, but you learn somehow to deal with it. We have been dealing with the loss of my Daddy for 13 yrs now. Sally, you are the baby of the family like I am, and I'm sure your Daddy had a special place just for you in his heart, as mine did. If you ever need to talk, I have an ear that you can lean on. Love you all and God bless you during this time.

I don't know that gut wrenching pain of losing a dad, husband or brother but I do know that it is something you will always be sad about b/c you will miss them forever, especially at certain events that your family shared always. But, I also know that as time passes you will be able to smile and laugh as you think of him b/c I think it's a gift to be able to remember the past and all the funny and silly moments you shared with someone! I will always pray for you Mr. Ricky and your family...I pray that one day soon you will laugh instead of cry b/c you will recall some great and treasured memories of a great man...

Dear Nancy, Ricky and family, So sorry and saddened to have learned about the passing of Mr. Newsom. Dolores Hardy was very kind to call to let us know about the unfortunate circumstances. Likewise, I apologize that we were unable to attend the funeral, as one of Kathy's sisters is in ICU at Henry Medical Center, in critical condition, and most of our time is now centered around her. Nonetheless, my prayers are with you all and the family and ask Our Lord Jesus Christ to usher Mr. Newsom into His Holy Kingdom and to give you all strength and courage during this difficult time of grief. May God bless you and protect you. With all our sympathy, Jorge and Kathy Ascunce.

Richard and I shared many good times and laughs together at the Depot in Greensboro. He always seemed glad to see me when I visited his office. Those kind of memories made when a young boy is growing up, will last forever. I cherish the times I spent with him as a small town kid watching the trains go by. I know you all will miss him; just remember how great it was having him here.

Dear Nancy, Ricky, Sally, & Joe - We're just having a hard time imagining come home to Union Point without Mr. Richard there! Where did he get all the stories and little jokes? 'Train Man' was a walking museum; he was always polite, considerate and approachable. Wonderful that the community has clones of those qualities in his family. Thank you for sharing him with us so graciously.
