Patrick McWhorter Dyar Sr., 90, of Greensboro, GA died Monday, December 9, 2002. Born June 22, 1912 in Bartow County, he was the son of the late Clifford Henry Dyar and Pattie McWhorter Dyar. After graduating from high school in Adairsville, Georgia in 1929, he attended Berea College in Kentucky, where he lettered in track and basketball and graduated with a BA in English in 1933. He received an MA in English Literature in 1940 from the University of Georgia. After graduating from Berea, he taught school in Wirtland, Kentucky and Sparta, Georgia before going to Miller County High School in Colquitt, Georgia in September of 1937. In 1940, he became principal of the high school and continued in that position until his departure from Colquitt in 1946. During Mr. Dyar''s tenure at Miller County High School, several events of note occurred in the athletic area; Colquitt won the first ever awarded championship in 6 man football in 1938; the track team won the state championship in 1945; the girls basketball team placed second in the state in 1945 and in 1946 won the state championship. After leaving Colquitt, Mr. Dyar and his family lived in Marietta, Georgia for a brief while where he was employed by American Book Company as a textbook salesman. In 1950, Mr. Dyar took a position as a sales representative for American Seating Company, a leading manufacturer of school and church furniture, and moved to Birmingham, Alabama, where he live for 12 years. In 1962, he was transferred to Georgia, where he resided in Greensboro until his passing. In 1976, American Seating Company sold its school furniture division to Interstate School Supplies, for whom Mr. Dyar continued to work until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro where he taught Hamps Sunday School Class.

Mr. Dyar was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Wilkin Dyar, in 1982. He is survived by a son, Dr. Patrick McWhorter Dyar Jr. and wife Patricia Dwelle Dyar of Sylvania, Georgia; a daughter, Dr. Kathryn Dyar-Patten and husband James Patten of North, Virginia; two brothers, J.P. Dyar of Greshamville, Georgia and George Dyar of Siloam, Georgia; nephews, Clifford Henry Dyar Jr. of Fort Smith, Arkansas, William Lee Dyar of Franklin, North Carolina, Jonothan Pressley Dyar Jr. of Greshamville, Georgia, George Monroe Dyar Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces, Martha Susan Dyar of Atlanta, Georgia, Margaret Elizabeth Dyar Patrick of Greshamville, Georgia, Patricia Dyar Gilbert of Athens, Georgia and Carol Dyar Sargent of Rincon, Georgia.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 14, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro, Georgia with Rev. Jimmy A. Long and Rev. George Peavy officiating. Interment will follow at Greenview Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Jon Dyar, George Dyar Jr., Cliff Dyar, Bill Dyar, Lawson Wilkin, David Wilkin, Wayne Wilkin, Andy Dyar and Clint Patrick. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday night at the Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be made to the American Heart Association, 246 Davis Road, Suite E, Augusta, GA 30907. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
