Marshall Maitland Abell, age 84, of Greensboro, GA died on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Saint Joseph''s At East Georgia in Greensboro, Georgia. Mr. Abell was born April 8, 1927 in Willington, Hartford County, Connecticut to the late Frederick Maitland Abell and Mildred Amidon Abell. He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut earning a Bachelors of Science and Masters of Art degrees. He attended Faulkner State, Springhill College and the University of Alabama for post graduate work and certification as a School Superintendent. He taught for four years in Connecticut before becoming a Headmaster at Asheville Country Day in Asheville, North Carolina for twenty-one years and then Bayside Academy in Daphne, Alabama for six years. For three years he was interim headmaster, one year at Santa Fe Preparatory School in New Mexico and two years at St. James Episcopal School in Texas. For the next six years he was headmaster of Victoria Episcopal School in Texas and then retired in 1997 from Nathanael Greene Academy after being headmaster for three and a half years. For a while he was the owner and printer of Insty Prints. Mr. Abell served his country during World War II in the United States Navy. He was an active and devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro and in the past had served as moderator of First Congregation Church in Asheville, North Carolina. Mr. Abell was a member of the Pen and Plate Club, the Mayflower Society, the Rotary Club, board member of Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools and was in the United States Navy Reserves.

In addition to his wife, Jean Campbell Abell of Greensboro, GA, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Wright of Horse Shoe, North Carolina; four sons, Christopher "Chris" Abell and Timothy "Tim" Abell, both of Asheville, North Carolina, Benjamin Abell of Baltimore, Maryland and Theodore "Ted" Abell of Yadkinville, North Carolina; a sister, Carol Gifford of Tucson, Arizona; ten grandchildren; four step grandchildren; one great grandchild; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12 noon at the First Presbyterian Church, 117 South Main Street, Greensboro, Georgia 30642 with Dr. James Choomack officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Zippy Duvall, Lee Rhodes, Al Dickerman, Ricky Moore, and Mark Higdon. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Crumbley, Mutt Rhodes, Greg Stewart, Alan Webb and Dick Schmidt.
