Tommy Glenn Ligon

Tommy Glenn Ligon of Greensboro, GA, died Friday, November 3, 2017 in Athens, GA.  Son of the late Arnold Ligon, Sr. and Aretta Wilkerson Ligon, he was born on February 3, 1948 in Madisonville, KY.  He graduated from Madisonville High School and attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he played football and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. On July 27, 1979, Tommy married the former Terri Burgess.  A lifelong trucking executive and owner, he was a proud independent partner of Lone Star Transportation.  Tommy was also deeply involved in the thoroughbred horse industry for over 45 years, and owned Tommy G. Ligon and Cottonwood Racing stables, where he won many awards including Ohio Breeder and Owner of the Year.  Tommy was an avid supporter of many charitable causes, including the Pete Nance Boys and Girls Club.  In 1989, Tommy and family moved from Kentucky to Conyers, GA. Tommy and his wife, Terri, have been residents of Greensboro for twelve years, but have been coming to Greensboro and Lake Oconee for over 30 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. 

In addition to his loving wife of thirty-eight years, Terri Ligon of Greensboro, GA, Tommy is survived by his daughter, Lauren Brooks (George III) of Smyrna, GA, and son Conley Ligon (Sarah) of Greensboro, GA; grandchildren, George Brooks, IV, Reese Ligon, and a second granddaughter arriving in January. Tommy is also survived by a large extended family and many beloved friends.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 7, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at McCommons Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, North Campus, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642 with Rev. Mike Morgan officiating.  There will be a reception afterwards at the Fellowship Hall of the Family Life Center at the North Campus.  Interment will be Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Homesite Cemetery in Providence, KY.  Serving as pallbearers are Tommy Blake, Steve Hathorn, Tony Granitz, Kim Nelson, Will VanMeter, and Larry Webb.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, Tommy G.
