Marjorie Smith Obituary

Marjorie Taylor Smith of Greensboro, died suddenly on Friday, January 30, 2004. Marjorie was born in Greene County to the late Willard Duncan Taylor and Mabel Wright Taylor and was the devoted wife of the late C. Weldon Smith, former Mayor and President of the Bank of Greensboro. Together they owned and operated C. W. Smith Insurance Agency since 1938. Mrs. Smith served as Chief Registrar of Greene County for many years.

Mrs. Smith had a lifelong love of flowers and flower arranging. After extensive study she earned the distinction of flower show judge and for over 30 years judged flower shows throughout Georgia. Marjorie was most active for over 60 years in Greensboro Garden Club, as well as Flower Arrangers Club of Georgia and Creative Study Club. She served as Trustee of the Garden Club of Georgia''s State Headquarters and board member of the Friends of the State Botanical Gardens, both of Athens.

Marjorie was a charming and gracious hostess and maintained her beautiful antebellum home with lovely antiques collected throughout her travels over her lifetime. She was a true Southern lady.

As an enthusiastic historic preservationist, she worked tirelessly to help establish Greensboro on the National Historic Register. She was a most ardent supporter of her community of Greensboro and served many civic organizational responsibilities, including her local Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society, Womans Club and former BPW club. She chaired Greensboro''s Bicentennial Celebration in 1975. Mrs. Smith was a member of Greene County Country Club and Athens Country Club. Among her closest friends were her fellow bridge club members of Greene County, Lake Oconee, and Athens.

Marjorie was devoted to her church, Greensboro First United Methodist, where she taught the Junior Class for over 20 years.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her loving family, including her sons and daughters-in law, Dr. Cliff W. Smith, Jr. and Bernie Todd Smith of Rochester, NY, Larry D. Smith and Donna Boswell Smith of Greensboro, GA.; and her daughter and son-in-law, Cecily Smith Callaway and John R. Callaway of Athens, GA.; her grandchildren, Cindy Callaway McKoy, Brad Smith, Melissa Callaway, Bo Smith, Alexander Smith, Taylor Smith and Morgan Smith; and her great granddaughter, Anna Alyssa McKoy.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 216, 202 W. Broad Street, Greensboro, GA 30642. Funeral Services will be held Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 4:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Greensboro with Rev. Richard Chewning officiating. Interment will follow in Greensboro City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are John Marchman, Lamar Callaway, Rick Ward, Ricky Easley, David Thornton, Fred Hunter Jr., David Kopp and Dan Jones. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Adams, Wayne Tamplin, Jimmy Baynes, Carey Williams Jr., Ken Cawthon, Robert Bradley and Craig Pruitt.
