John Benjamin Stewart Jr., age 54, Mayor of Union Point, Georgia, died Thursday, May 13, 2004 at Athens Regional Medical Center. He was born in Athens on August 31, 1949 to the late John Benjamin Stewart Sr. and Jean McBee Stewart. After graduating from Greensboro High School in 1967, he attended the University of Georgia and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Business Administration. He served in the Army National Guard and worked at the Farmer''s Bank of Union Point where he later became President. In 1979 he started his first term as Mayor of Union Point and served 25 years during which he helped revitalize the downtown area. In 1984 he founded Stewart Finance Company and over several years had served as President of the Lions Club, Chairman of the Board at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital, and President of the Georgia Industrial Loan Association. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union Point which he loved dearly. A� He is survived by his wife, Janice Simons Stewart of Union Point, GA; four sons, J.B. Stewart of Union Point, GA, Joe Stewart of Union Point, GA, Pete O''Neal and wife Kristy of Greensboro, GA and Win O''Neal of Union Point, GA; one granddaughter, Samantha O''Neal of Greensboro, GA; and a host of other relatives and friends. A� Graveside Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, May 16, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery in Union Point with Rev. Landon Carey and Rev. Grady Mosely officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Jim Cline, Fred Duke, Richard Campbell, Weldon Sisson, W.H. Rhodes Jr., and David Stephens. The family requests that any memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church , Park Avenue, Union Point, GA 30669 or to the American Cancer Society, 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens, GA 30605.
