John D. Stewart, age 86, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Wednesday, April 6, 2005 at Greene Point Health Care Center in Union Point. On February 17, 1919 he was born in Oxford, GA to the late Noel D. Stewart and Allie Moody Stewart. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1937 and from Auburn University in 1955. He joined the United States Army Air Force in 1942 and flew with the 5th Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II. For eight years he was a postman in Auburn, AL and in 1965 he joined the Greensboro Post Office retiring in February of 1986 after twenty-one years of service. He was a very active and faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a long time deacon and treasurer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dorothy Mize Stewart of Greensboro, GA; a daughter, Rhonda Stewart Payne of Greensboro, GA; a granddaughter, Meredith Payne of Greensboro, GA; seven nieces; nine nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Dona Beth Stewart in 1960 and a sister, Myra Brinkley.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Rick L. Mize and Rev. Wayne Usry officiating. Interment will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery with military honors. Serving as pallbearers are Tobey Dye, Donald Moody, Cecil Brinkley, Lamar Kersey, Herman Thomas and John Usry. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy English, Herbert Chapman, Goodwin Bryan and Comer Tolbert. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday night at the funeral home.
