John Culbreath Obituary

John Hiram Culbreath, of Union Point, Georgia, died, Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Greene Point Health Care & Rehab in Union Point. He was born on January 18, 1916 in Greene County between Union Point and Siloam to the late William Hiriam Culbreath and Jessie Griffeth Culbreath He grew up in Union Point with a family of four sisters and two brothers. He graduated from Union Point High School and completed a correspondent course in Business Administration and Commercial law. He worked part-time from 1936 to 1939 at Kimbrough Carlton Drug Store and from 1939 to 1941 at Callaway''s store and funeral home. In 1941 he moved to Baltimore where he worked at Glenn L. Martin for four years, moving back to Union Point in 1945. He worked with the United States Postal Service at his hometown Post Office in Union Point, Georgia. At the time of his retirement in 1977 he had achieved the position of Supervisor.

John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Union Point joining in 1929 and serving in various capacities for over fifty-three years. He began his service in 1936, as an Intermediate boy, when he was elected by the church to serve as Sunday School Secretary. He later served as teacher of the Intermediate Department and the Men''s Bible Class. For forty years he was Sunday School Director and deacon. He was chairman of the Building Committee for the present church facilities. He also served the Georgia Baptist Association as Brotherhood Director, Clerk of the Association and as Moderator.

He served on the Board of Directors of the Penfield Christian Home and was treasurer for many years. Among his various services in civic organizations he was a member of the Board of Directors of Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital; fifty-four years as a member of the Union Point Lions Club; a Union Point City Councilman and Mayor Pro-tem; served on Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Union Point Community Center; coordinator of the local blood bank; and Chairman of the local Red Cross.

Mr. John is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Reese Culbreath of Union Point, GA; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Virginia Moody, Grace Hinson, Hilda Byrd, Fannie Maude Culbreath, Harold G. Culbreath and William Franklin Culbreath.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669 with Rev. Harry Michael officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, Rhodes Street, Union Point, GA 30669. Serving as pallbearers are Rabun Culbreath, Harry Culbreath, Ben Hinson, Jimmy Hinson, Richard Moody, Ralph Byrd, Gregg Reese and Tony Reese. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of Union Point First Baptist Church. The family requests that any memorials be made to The Penfield Christian Home, 1061 Mercer Circle, Union Point, GA 30669 or the First Baptist Church, 206 Thornton Street, Union Point, GA 30669.
