Byron Akins Obituary

Byron Cawthon Akins, age 71, of Greensboro, Georgia, died Friday, April 27, 2012 at his residence. Byron was born July 9, 1940 to the late William Carroll Akins and Lucille Toland Akins Johnson. He attended Greene County Schools and married the former Linda Smallwood on September 17, 1966. He first ran the Richland, then worked for Wayne Farms and retired from Wellington Puritan Mills after working for over thirty years. Byron enjoyed gardening, selling vegetables and cooking bbq, stew and skins.

He is survived by his wife of forty-five years, Linda Smallwood Akins of Greensboro, GA; two daughters, Elaine West and husband Ken of Greensboro, GA and Angela Whitaker and husband Jeffrey of Eatonton, GA; sister, Mary Hansford of Gray, GA; brother, Wayne Akins and wife Diane of Greensboro, GA; sister-in-law, June Akins of Greensboro, GA; three grandchildren, Tucker West, Sara West and David Whitaker; and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Cassie Lee Taylor Akins; and brothers, William "Billy" Akins and Joseph L. Akins.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Bruce Lovin and Rev. Dennis Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow at Greensboro City Cemetery, Memorial Drive, Greensboro, GA 30642. Serving as pallbearers are Ceils Merritt, Allen Bryant, Dink Dominy, Charles Smallwood, Robby Jones and Casey Blount. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday night at McCommons Funeral Home.
